Conserve, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Earth Day was a fun and exciting day for us. When we walked into the room the lights and computers were off, which was different. As we got settled Ms. Herndon informed us that we were going to try to keep the lights off as much as possible today, we wouldn’t be using the computers, television, radio, listening centers, or pencil sharpener today. She even went so far as to unplug some of the objects that used electricity. We wrote and recited a poem about the earth. Once we had written the poem we glued it to a brown paper bag, put on our plastic gloves, walked around our school campus, and picked up garbage. Although at first look, we didn’t see much litter, we continued to search and were able to pick up quite a few pieces of land pollution. We even found an old black tire. Some of us tried to lift it and then we bounced on it for a little while.
While collecting waste we saw a terrarium that another class had outside and termites in a green top. We saw so many neat rocks that we began to collect them for a classroom rock collection in Mrs. Hyatt’s room. As we continued to walk we observed leaves and picked up seeds from pine trees and threw them into the air. Ms. Herndon said when she was little she called them helicopters. She told us to throw it into the air and we watched it twirl in the air as it fell to the ground. We put the yellow flowers under our chins to see if we liked butter and blew the white seeds off of the Dandelion flowers. It was so much fun.
